The Celebrated Artist Neville Budhai (1928-2001)
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Neville Budhai was born in the province of Camaguey, Cuba. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Ferdinand University of Madrid, and the National School of Graphic Arts Madrid Spain. In addition, he studied in Paris, France at the College of Technical Art Applied to Industry and Commerce.
In 1959-1960 he painted historical and important areas in Old Havana, Vedado and Marianao. In 1961 he established an art studio in Montego Bay, Jamaica. During this time he began to paint the vibrant and electrifying street scenes including the people of the city. Later in 1962 he formally established the Budhai Art Gallery in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Taking root on the island of Jamaica, Mr. Budhai traveled the entire country sketching and painting intensively capturing the warmth of the tropical colors and the very essence of everyday life in small towns and large cities. His work proliferated with each and every stroke of his brush on canvas and he quickly became a favorite for art collectors. In fact his art gallery became a landmark stop for vacationers on their way through Montego Bay westward to Negril. In addition, he was co-founder of the art society and his artwork captures the very essence of Jamaica.
With his passion and enthusiasm for the arts and culture in Jamaica, Mr. Budhai went on to display his paintings at the Institute of Jamaica, The National Gallery and Galleries of Kingston and Montego Bay. In 1984 he exhibited 68 paintings at the World Bank Gallery in Washington D.C. In 1982-1985 he had a long running exhibition at the Royal Gallery and Frame shop in Alexandria, VA.
Later in the 80's he traveled to Puerto Rico and began painting the street scenes of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was awarded the Taino Symbol "Cemi" by the Historical Library and Municipal Government of Old San Juan for his contribution to the cultural affairs of the city.
In the mid 80's he established an art studio in Miami Beach, FL and traveled the continental USA painting scenes of Washington, DC and historic Old Town Alexandria, VA. Neville Budhai was often seen painting along sidewalks in towns and cities across the U.S. gaining friends and admirers along the way.
Neville Budhai's last work was focused on large paintings, specifically murals and scientific visual art applied to industry and cultural affairs.The celebrated artist has since past away (12/2001) but his work still remains strong in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.
